Not for the first time, Gergely Bogányi is undertaking a challenge that demands transcendental powers. But this time, the young Kossuth Prize winning pianist is aiming to do something we believe unprecedented. If we hadn’t heard it confirmed from the horse’s mouth, we would not have believed it: he is going to play every single piece of music by Chopin in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, over a period of just two days. This is probably a unique world event – no one else has ever attempted such a thing. We might imagine this is an attempt to get into the Guiness Book of Records (and it would have a fitting place there.) But knowing as we do Gergely Bogányi’s ambitious, uncompromising yet exceptionally sensitive musicality, as well as his human attitudes, we know that he is not going to serve up a perfunctory performance, but aims to create something lasting through his intensity and command.

These two days promise to be interesting and exciting because the listener has the opportunity to attend a unique “super intensive course” in Chopin’s music. Chopin is devilishly difficult to play and on occasion has an avant garde sonority. But listeners more interested in his melodies will also find much to their taste as Chopin left probably the richest lyrical corpus of music in the literature. Gergely Bogányi has structured the programmes so that they give a self-contained image of Chopin’s world and those genres in which he worked. This one man Chopin marathon signifies the climax of the Chopin year, as well as an artist’s personal homage to the great Polish giant of music.
